Music
Music has always been at the heart of worship. Indeed it is difficult to imagine a cathedral without music. The very acts of singing, playing and hearing connect us to levels and ranges of meaning which go beyond words.
There has been a tradition of choral singing at York for a millennium or more, with clergy singers from the start, boy choristers for much of that time and lay songmen for around 500 years. Our choristers, choral scholars, songmen and organists are part of a living tradition which has evolved for thousands of years.
The Minster is keen to acknowledge and preserve these traditions, but also to explore how contemporary choral music can connect us with our faith and enrich our lives today.
