Physical Access
York Minster is a building of international importance spiritually, architecturally, historically and archaeologically. It is made up of a series of linked structures in variable condition.
Physical access to the Minster is therefore limited in some areas, but we are committed to making as much of the site as accessible as possible to everyone.
Where areas of the site are inaccessible, either for structural or for health and safety reasons, we have made extra efforts with interpretation (e.g. with displays) to bring those areas to a wider audience.
Mobility
Wheelchairs for use in the Minster are available on request by ringing 01904 557222 to book, or by speaking to any member of staff in the Minster.
There is no designated space for leaving prams or pushchairs during your visit.
Building entrances
A permanent stone ramp has been constructed at the West End of the Minster. A temporary ramp suitable for wheelchairs and prams is in place outside the South door.
Nave, Quire & Chapter House
Inside the cathedral there is a ramp from the Nave into the Quire and from the North Transept to the Chapter House.
Tower
Access to the Tower is by steep, narrow and tapering stairs and numbers are limited for safety reasons by a timed ticketing system. Children under 8 years of age are not permitted up the Tower. Entry to the tower may be refused by staff if it is felt that someone would pose a risk to themselves or others by ascending.
Undercroft and Crypt
Access to these areas is by stairs (with strong handrails); there are also different levels and restricted widths in these spaces that make the Undercroft unsuitable for wheelchairs or prams. Entry is by ticket.
Toilets
Accessible toilet facilities are available and can be accessed via the North Quire aisle.
Car parking
There is no public car parking at York Minster. Disabled parking facilities close to the Minster can be viewed at www.york.gov.uk.
Signage/symbols
We are committed to making the Minster as easy to get round as possible.
Access to Worship and Events
The Dean and Chapter want everyone to be able to join in the events and acts of worship in the Minster. In an ancient building there are some places which are difficult to access, but which are so historic and well-loved that we do not wish to put them out of use. We therefore undertake:
-
To provide wherever possible physical access for all to places in the Minster where worship and events take place
-
To look for opportunities to extend that access to places where at present the problems of access are insurmountable
-
To provide each day a service of Holy Communion in an accessible place
The Zouche Chapel, which is a much loved and secluded place for prayer, presents problems for access which we have not been able to solve, short of measures that would destroy its special character. We shall do all we can to help people who wish to attend any acts of worship in the Zouche Chapel, and invite anyone who foresees difficulty in managing to contact a member of the Minster staff, or ring 01904 557200 (the Minster's Reception) so that we may assist.
