Collections

Here at York Minster we hold an array of different collections, all of which can be viewed today.  The collections include:

Archaeology

Archaeology

York Minster's rich history means it is the source of many artifacts from its past. Through its lifetime the Minster site has been excavated on many occasions. Some of the finds from these digs can be found on display in the Undercroft. However, more examples are also to be found in the care of the Archives and can be researched by appointment.

Displaced Glass

Displaced Glass

Glass is of extreme importance to the Minster.  It gives the building its energy and forms inspiration for many who visit.  Displaced glass is glass that no longer sits in its original location.  The collection is in store, but examples from it may be viewed in the Undercroft.

Historic Furnishings

Historic Furnishings

These can be seen throughout the Minster. Items of exceptional note include the Astronomical Clock in the North Transept, the Medieval Archbishop's Chair located in St. Michael's Chapel and the work of 'Mousie' Thompson of Kilburn, in the Quire Sanctuary. However, do not miss the opportunity to view more in St. William's College.

Monuments

Monuments

York Minster has a spectacular array of monuments and memorials both inside and in the grounds of the building. The North Quire Aisle is especially rich in tombs and memorials. The Archbishops of the past are commemorated in many of our side chapels. Dean's Park is home to the Kohima Memorial, while Constantine the Great can be found near the South Transept Entrance.

Silver

Silver

Our collection of silver and 'treasures' can be viewed in the Treasury as part of the Undercroft tour. We have deposits that date back to the tenth century, but much of the silver belongs to the parishes on whose behalf we hold it for safekeeping. Items to look out for on the tour include the Horn of Ulph and Tsar Nicholas II's crucifix.

Textiles

Textiles

Examples of our textile collection can be seen in the Minster all around.  They include the altar frontals and kneelers of the chapels, as well as banners.  The vestments worn by the clergy are also part of the textile collection.

Worked Stone

At the Minster we are very lucky to have our own stonemasons caring for the fabric of the building. Examples of their work, and their predecessors' labour, can be seen both internally and externally.
