The Minster Community Committee

The Minster Community Committee

The Minster Community Committee

The Community Committee is the elected group who represent the views of the Minster community to the Dean and Chapter and the wider community. The committee was established following the Cathedrals Measures Act and the current committee was elected for a three year term at the end of 2004.

Who is on the Committee?

The committee consists of 12 elected members from the Minster Community Roll, four of whom are elected members on the Cathedral Council. Other members include two of the Canons, a Sister from the Order of the Holy Paraclete and the Dean. Chris Rundle and Canon Glyn Webster are the joint Chairs, Maggie Draper is the Secretary and Margaret Clegg is the Treasurer. The details of the current committee can be seen by clicking on the menu bar Present Members at the left.

When does the Committee meet?

The committee meets around six times a year to discuss and respond to issues that the community has raised or provide an opinion to issues raised by the Dean and Chapter. Formal minutes are taken and the records of the meetings held since January 2005 are available. The minutes since January 2005 can be read by clicking on the appropriate link at the lower left side.

At our first meeting in 2005 the new committee was given a charge by the Dean who wanted us to concentrate on worship, pastoral care, and service to the wider community. The committee agreed to use this charge as an outline for their work. The Dean's full charge to the committee is available here by clicking at the left of the screen. (photograph: Martyn Weaver)

Constitution and Finances

Does the Committee have a Constitution?

The committee decided that a formal constitution should be established to help formalise the remit of the committee and its membership. This was agreed by the Dean and Chapter in 2005 and is available here.

The Committee and Money

In 2005 the Dean asked the Community Committee to help disperse some of the funds that the Minster gives away each year. The committee agreed a policy that funds should be divided equally into three areas: international charities, national charities and local charities. The full list of groups and organizations we supported in 2007 are available here.

The allocations made in 2005, 2006 and 2007 may be found on the Archives page in this section of the York Minster website.
