Donations by Gift Aid
Charities are able to reclaim the basic rate of tax at 22% on donations made by Gift Aid. Higher rate taxpayers can reclaim the balance (18%) of the higher rate tax when submitting tax returns.
Donors should make a declaration that they are taxpayers with enough tax liability (income or capital gains tax) in the year of the gift to cover the tax to be reclaimed.
Gifts of Shares
Shares given to a charity attract no capital gains liability despite any increase in value. The donor is considered to have disposed of the shares at the value at which they were acquired. The shares given can be offset by the donor at their full market value against income tax in the year of the gift.
The avoidance of capital gains tax and the reduction in income tax means that any donor can make a gift to charity at a greatly reduced cost. Thus, making a gift of shares valued at £1m, but acquired for £250k, would effectively cost the donor just £300k. The tax avoided is £300k capital gains tax and £400k income tax
